Why Are My Outdoor Stairs So Slippery?
Three culprits drive 95 % of slippery outdoor stair complaints in South-East Queensland.
- Algae and lichen — invisible biofilm that gets dangerously slick when wet.
- Smooth or worn surfaces — old oil finishes that have polished smooth over years of foot traffic.
- Poor drainage — water pooling on the tread instead of running off.
The Five Fixes — From Cheapest to Most Permanent
1. Clean and Remove Algae
Start here. Mix one part household bleach to four parts water (or use a dedicated deck cleaner like 30 Seconds), scrub with a stiff broom, hose off. Repeat every 6 months. This alone fixes most slippery-stair complaints in Brisbane.
2. Apply an Anti-Slip Coating
Products like Intergrip, Diggers Non-Slip and Wattyl Stepmaster add fine aggregate to a clear or tinted finish. Roll on after cleaning. Lasts 2–4 years before re-coat.
3. Install Non-Slip Nosing Strips
Aluminium or fibreglass strips with a grit insert, screwed or epoxied to the front edge of each tread. Provide a clear visual cue and dramatic grip improvement. Best for high-traffic external stairs.
4. Add Adhesive Grip Tape
Heavy-duty self-adhesive grit tape, available in clear, black or yellow. Quickest fix and ideal for rentals or temporary safety upgrades. Replace every 12–18 months as the adhesive ages.
5. Replace with Grooved Hardwood Treads
The permanent solution. Spotted gum or blackbutt treads with three machined grooves running the full width achieve a P4 slip rating naturally. Pair with an oil finish, not a varnish.
What If the Stairs Are Already Damaged?
Sometimes a tread is too far gone for surface fixes — soft from rot, split, or sloping the wrong way. In that case, replacing individual treads is straightforward for a QBCC-licenced carpenter. For older flights, consider a full Queenslander stair restoration or new build per our external stairs service.
A Word on Liability
Public liability and home insurance usually cover slip-and-fall incidents — but insurers will check whether the homeowner took reasonable preventative action. Documenting an annual clean and using one of the fixes above is good evidence of due diligence.
