    Queenslander Stairs: A Brisbane Specialty

    Original Queenslander entry stairs are part of what makes Brisbane homes look like Brisbane homes — tall hardwood stringers, turned newel posts, decorative balusters and a wide bull-nose top tread. After 50–100 years in the weather, many are tired, rotten at the base or no longer code-compliant. We restore the heritage look while bringing the stair up to current standards: matching original profiles in Spotted Gum or Blackbutt, replacing rotten footings with H4 stirrups, and re-engineering the balustrade to meet the 1 m height / 125 mm gap rule without losing character.     Australian Standards & Council Compliance

    Every new external stair we build is sized and detailed to the National Construction Code (NCC / BCA Part 3.9), AS 1657 and Queensland council requirements. The headline numbers we work to: riser 115–190 mm, going 240–355 mm, handrail 865–1000 mm above the tread nosing, balustrade ≥1 m high where the drop exceeds 1 m, and no opening that lets a 125 mm sphere pass through. Where building approval is required (typically decks/landings over 1 m above ground), we coordinate certification and supply engineer-signed footing details.     Balustrade Options: Timber, Wire, Glass & Steel

    The balustrade defines how the finished stair looks — and is often the single biggest visual decision. Vertical timber balusters suit traditional homes and Queenslanders, painted or oiled. Stainless wire preserves the view and works beautifully on modern decks. Glass panels are the premium choice for entertaining decks where you want an uninterrupted outlook. Powdercoated steel is low-maintenance and ideal for coastal builds. All four can be installed to the 1 m height / 125 mm gap rule.     06 · Checklist

    What Determines the Scope of Your External Stair Build

    Every external stair is quoted on its own merits after a site visit. These are the factors that make the biggest difference to the size of the job:

    • Total rise — the height from ground to landing sets the tread count and whether an intermediate landing is required.
    • Timber species — treated pine, Spotted Gum, Blackbutt and Merbau each behave and finish differently.
    • Balustrade type — vertical timber, stainless wire and glass panels are very different builds.
    • Footings & site access — sloping blocks, reactive soils and tight side access all add work.
    • Approvals & engineering — stairs above 1 m generally need building approval and signed footing details.
    • Finish level — oiled, stained or fully painted, plus any anti-slip treatment to the treads.

    Our Build Process: From Quote to Final Coat

    Every Carpentry Worx external stair follows the same seven-step process so there are no surprises:

    1. Site visit & quote — measure the rise, check footings, confirm material and balustrade.
    2. Written fixed quote — itemised supply, install, finish and any council/engineering line items.
    3. Council & engineering — where required, we coordinate building approval and signed footing details.
    4. Footings & posts — concrete pad or pier footings, H4 stirrups, posts plumbed and braced.
    5. Stringers, treads & risers — cut to spec, fixed with galvanised or stainless hardware.
    6. Balustrades & handrails — installed to NCC heights, gaps and load requirements.
    7. Sand, seal & final coat — oil, stain or paint, plus a workmanship-guarantee handover walk.
