We assess every stair for the things that cause injuries: tread rot or split, loose stringers, wobbly handrails, balustrade gaps wider than 125mm, riser inconsistency, missing anti-slip strips and inadequate lighting. Every repair restores the stair to current Australian Standards, not just original spec.

Queensland stairs cop UV, summer storms and termites. The patterns we see most: rotten treads at the front edge where rain pools, stringers detaching from posts as fixings rust out, handrails loose at junctions, balustrades cracking from sun damage, and footings settling in reactive clay soils.

External residential stairs must meet the National Construction Code (BCA) and AS 1657 — riser height 115–190mm, going 240–355mm, balustrades 1m high (decks above 1m), gaps under 125mm, and handrails 865–1000mm above tread nosing. We bring older stairs up to current code where structural repair is warranted.

A two-minute check every six months catches most stair faults early. Walk every tread looking for movement; press handrails firmly side-to-side and up-down; sight along the stringer for sag or rotation; check the underside for rot, termite mudding and rusting fixings; measure balustrade gaps with a CD case (any wider than 125mm fails).
