Expect $5,000–$25,000 for most homes using Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Merbau or treated pine. A QBCC-licenced builder ensures the deck is engineered for QLD's UV, humidity and storm loads.
South East Queensland sees high UV, summer downpours and salt-air on coastal suburbs — all of which test decking timber. Spotted Gum and Blackbutt offer excellent durability and a beautiful Australian look. Merbau is dense and stable but bleeds tannin. Treated pine is budget-friendly. (Australian hardwood) is virtually maintenance-free but costs more upfront.
Smart design saves money. Things to plan up front: orientation for shade and breeze, board direction (long boards make small decks look bigger), step-down vs flush thresholds, drainage falls (3mm per metre minimum), balustrade style, and where you'll add a roof, screens or built-in seating in future.
Even the best deck needs care. Sweep regularly to stop debris trapping moisture, re-oil hardwood every 12–18 months, check fixings annually for lift or rust, and inspect bearers and joists each spring before storm season for rot or termite signs.
