Why Your Timber Choice is So Critical in Queensland
Humidity and Moisture
Our high humidity and intense rainfall create the perfect breeding ground for mould, mildew, and fungal decay. Timber that isn't naturally resistant or properly treated will absorb this moisture, leading it to soften, swell, and rot from the inside out. This compromises the structural integrity of everything from deck bearers to pergola posts.
Intense UV and Heat
The Queensland sun is relentless. Extreme UV exposure breaks down the fibres in timber, causing it to bleach, dry out, and become brittle. This leads to cracking, splitting, and warping, which not only looks terrible but can also create safety hazards like splinters on a deck or instability in a staircase. Destructive Termites
Termites are a year-round threat in Brisbane and the surrounding areas, causing millions of dollars in damage. Using untreated, susceptible pine for a deck sub-frame is an open invitation for a termite colony. Your timber choice must either be a naturally resistant hardwood or a timber that's been treated to the correct level to repel these destructive pests. Dealing with the aftermath often requires extensive termite damage repairs.
Decoding Timber Properties: What Carpenters Look For
Durability Class (AS 5604)
This is a measure of a timber's natural resistance to decay and termites. It's a simple rating from 1 to 4. - Class 1 (Most Durable): Expected to last 25+ years in-ground and 40+ years above-ground. Includes species like Ironbark, Spotted Gum, and Forest Red Gum. - Class 2 (Durable): Expected to last 15-25 years in-ground. Includes Blackbutt and Merbau. - Class 3 & 4 (Less Durable): Not suitable for outdoor or structural use unless properly treated. Many softwoods and less-resilient hardwoods fall here.
Hardwood vs. Softwood
This isn't about how 'hard' the wood feels. Hardwoods (from flowering trees) are generally denser and more durable, making them ideal for high-wear applications like decking and stairs. Treatment Levels (H-Levels)
For less durable timbers like pine, a chemical treatment is applied to protect them. The 'H' rating tells you where it can be used. - H2: For indoor framing, protects against termites. - H3: For above-ground outdoor use (decking boards, pergola rafters), protects against termites and moderate decay. - H4: For in-ground use (posts, sleepers), protects against termites and severe decay. - H5: For constant contact with ground and fresh water (retaining walls, pilings).
Our Recommendations: The Right Timber for Your Project
- Decking: For beautiful and resilient new timber decks, you can't go past Australian hardwoods like Spotted Gum or Blackbutt (Class 1 & 2). Merbau is a popular, cost-effective Class 2 hardwood, but be aware it is prone to 'tannin bleed' which can stain surrounding concrete if not prepared correctly. For sub-frames, H3 or H4 treated pine is the compliant and cost-effective standard.
- Pergolas & Patios: For posts, a durable H4 treated pine or a Class 1 hardwood is essential. For rafters and beams, H3 treated pine is common, or you can use hardwood for a premium architectural look. Always ensure your fixings are galvanised or stainless steel to prevent corrosion.
- External Stairs: Safety and durability are non-negotiable. We always use Class 1 hardwood for treads (the part you step on). For the structural 'stringers', H4 treated pine or hot-dip galvanised steel are the only options we trust to meet QBCC requirements.
- Structural Framing: For stud walls and roof trusses, MGP10 or MGP12 graded treated pine (H2) is the industry standard. It's strong, reliable, and protected against the ever-present threat of termites.
